Both of these features depend on something called the DNS service.
DNS:
DNS is an internet service that maps a name to an IP address by asking another server (8.8.8.8 in this case), say pornhub.com to an IP address
> pornhub.com
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: pornhub.com
Address: 31.192.120.36
With Adblock and Family mode, our box will redirect the 'server' 8.8.8.8 to a third party service that will map the incoming name to an IP address that's not valid. It will return something that will send Pornhub to somewhere not valid.
Things to Try:
- Many DNS requests are cached by the Operating System. On iPhone, you can turn on airplane mode and turn it off, that will remove all the cache.
- Some services use its own 'private' DNS service, which is used to bypass DNS rewriting. Nothing we can do here.
- These services are great, but they can't block everything, some parental supervision is needed.
- Some Ad services will evade this DNS thingy, so ... they may not 100% work.
