    Multi-mode fiber connection between the Firewalla Gold Plus SFP and the Firewalla Switch X, with prototype ears for the Gold Plus SFP.

    I'm building an ADU and planning to run ethernet between the new building and my house. If I wanted to run fiber can you tell me what kind of cable I would need to buy? I have no experience with this but it seems like I should go ahead and run it with the ethernet as well.

    John Harrold  Not an expert but from what I've read from others it is typically suggested to avoid copper between buildings due to grounding issues, so fiber would be better. A low voltage conduit is the way to go however since then you can run whatever you want and change it when the need arises.

    John Harrold single mode fibers (yellow fibers) are good for long distances. You will need to pair up with single mode SFP+ modules on both sides to make it work. Personally, if it is not too expensive, it's good to run another pair of copper Ethernet too.

    Aaron Dickinson For small businesses (like big warehouses / industrial buildings), we do recommend fiber. Not that expensive and are fairly good towards interference from heavy machinery. 

    Also, it is perfectly okay to use RJ45/Copper for shorter distances too.  

    edit: we also see fiber used in luxery homes from our MSP partners, who install/manage everything.

    Due to a chip shortage, late PCB production (due to AI hogging production lines), we are not sure when we will have the switch SE available (some of the later switch SE units may get delivered in October/November now). Switch X is still good to order (for now)

    I as well ordered an SE switch as a spare on my network for single point failures and that was maybe a week ago. Is there a way to check the status on receiving that switch? It’s not a requirement that I have it tomorrow by any means but I just am curious on how to track the order itself and status so I can check on occasion.

    I would consider the X for future proofing, but I’m concerned about fan noise. My network equipment is in an office/bedroom closet and I’m concerned about the fan. The closet has hollow core closet doors. Would the X fans be noticeable?

    If the Switch X is inside a cabinet that has a door, you are unlikely to hear anything outside. (Unless the cabinet gets very hot, then the fan will likely spin louder)

    @Todd Dukeshier, my switchX is A LOT quieter than my gen 1 unifi US-24-250w (a 24 port POE switch). I'd say the SwitchX is quieter than the Synology NAS in the same area.
