SFP+ would kinda be a must for a 10gig device. Most of the ISP’s in my country carry those kinds lf speed over fiber and use very poor ONT’s that most people would die to get rid off. I’d maybe try something with a PCI slot on the board and a low profile back plate so if people want to install a specific card with SFP+ on it would be possible without bringing up the initial cost too high.

    I have changed my mind!
    RJ45 all ports okay.
    Soldered 8GB RAM okay.
    BUT
double the CPU power and then underclock it slightly to keep it cool.

Keep the price 999 USD so that it can and will be released. Postage and handling depends on the shipping method and target country.
    or better yet
    Do as you please
    AND TAKE MY MONEY!
    like
    Private Indiegogo or
what HUDWAY does with its huds and stuff. (bought two)

Most consumer will use RJ45, if fiber comes to the house it will typically need to pass through the provider box to be setup in bridge mode and will connect to the FW10G over RJ45. SPF/RJ45 adapters are very expensive, I think it will save $100 or so to most people to have 2 RJ45 instead of 2 SPF although 2 of each would be ideal.

Yes they they pass the fiber through the provider box which is usually very poor, and even in bridge mode you will have poor performance issues. It would be way more convenient to skip that box and control the connection via the Firewalla box all toghether. Yeah it will save some money on the box but get you an extra box you can’t control. Most of profesionals I know would rather pay the extra 100$ for that.

@Stefan, you can't just bypass it though. Doesn't work like that. Most ISPs who provide fiber do so with a PON system and you cannot use a normal router and SFP port to just take the fiber directly in. You either need a very special SFP transceiver or the router has to have an SFP port be specifically as a PON port in the hardware (needs a PON MAC).  If you do make one of those two scenarios happen, you still have to know a lot of your ISP hardware info and be able to program your connection yourself with the proper serial number, connection type, sometimes vlan info, and sometimes pppoe info. Those are thing most consumers don't know, and some of those cannot even be done on the few availabile special modules available today which makes it impossible anyway. That type of hardware to integrate into this would also be very costly for the few users capable of even using it.

I know about the XSFP tranceiver, but as long as you have the option it’s better than the ISP provided box.

I feel like Firewalla might have jumped the gun on locking down the specifications for their 10G unit. It's possible they were in a hurry because of the CNY, or maybe it was an attempt to keep costs manageable. However, the outcome is a product that, while aimed at consumers, sports features more akin to enterprise-level devices, making its $1000 price tag a tough pill to swallow for the average consumer. This isn't even taking into account the added expenses of VAT, local taxes, shipping, and customs for international buyers.

Why not consider conducting a public survey to truly grasp what the users desire, instead of making assumptions about their needs? Granted, this approach might delay the launch of the 10G unit, possibly pushing its release beyond this year. But, wouldn't it be better to have a product on the market that people are excited to purchase?

What about the fact that a ton of people are just fine with it being rj-45 but just aren't here saying the same thing over and over and over again. Because we've actually read their (firewalla) comments on it and the 9 pages of others here before...

Federico, this thread is the public survey. Ten pages of comments, opinions, and counter-opinions.

@Federico I’m happy with Ethernet only because many times firewalls/routers/switches/Wireless AP’s say what the throughput is in datasheets but that is usually in best conditions. Actual real world seems to frequently be less. I want to use all the bells and whistles (features) of current and future Firewalla software which means more CPU and RAM resources being used. As such it is saying 10Gig and they said they might actually be able to push 11-12Gb total with all 4 ports. Knowing this, I think this would be a great product if you could have 5Gb service from one provider and 1Gb from another ISP. You could go full out with those 2 providers with all features on. It seems like a great product to me. The extra headroom I think can be put to very good use for example more granular QoS or near real time IPS/IDS updates. I know they are doing things in these areas, however just trying to show that the extra performance capabilities can be used to further improve things. I also hope they put in the 8GB of RAM rather than 4GB. I assume the cost difference would be slight compared to the total cost of the box. I’m happy to pay $10 more or so knowing the current software doesn’t need it, but Firewalla of 2 years from now might.

The colors of the FWG look a lot more professional than the FWG Pro. That white and yellow is terrible… lol.

I know colors are probably low on your list of priorities though. 😁

I too like the colors of the FWG and Gold+, but didn't comment previously on the White and Yellow since making it happen was the most important.  I will comment that darker is better in my utility room where dust and grime accumulates.

Why do you always use copper ports? I understand the price should be under 1000 dollars. However, 10Gbps performance means a corporate firewall. For this, there may be 2 combo 10G SFP+ ports.

    Adem,

Yeah, the lack of SFP+ is probably the most debated spec.

I think the white Gold Pro models look sexy. Great colors and look for the device.

Not really. Home connections are getting WAY faster than small and medium businesses, and even some corporate places. Spectrum, Charter, Frontier, and ATT all have 5gb or higher plans across much of their nationwide coverage areas for a very reasonable price now, and there are multiple "little guys" who offer 10gb or higher in certain regions of the US. Homes are the biggest target of this device and the 10gb speeds will fit a lot of homes in the coming years. I even know of one ISP offering 25-100gbps home plans across the southeastern region of the US. I would love an SFP+ myself as all my switches connect with that or SFP28, but it is simple enough to use a single RJ45 transceiver on the first switch you go to from the Firewalla. The newest Broadcom chip model does the conversion with a lot less power than all previous generation ones (1.8w) and supports 1/2.5/5/10gb on the port as well.

I live in Turkiye and 10Gbps speed is not even in the bank. Who needs 10Gbps internet speed at home. Of course, if you are going to turn your home into an ISP. This product is not only used in America. If a device with 10Gbps performance is to be produced, this means that companies can use this device.

That is very cool, but I agree with others that the white/yellow doesn’t look very good compared to the Black/Yellow of the current FWG/+/SE. Yellow/Black might be cool.

Can’t wait to hear how it performs in testing once you get it back.

Can we use the USB Type c port for 5G dongle ? so that mean we can use it as wan/lan port !

I second, third and fourth the use of "the USB Type c port for 5G dongle ? so that mean we can use it as wan/lan port !"

I have been requesting being able to use an USB to Ethernet adapter on the Purples and Golds for a long time and would really appreciate that support being added.  I will note that depending on the version of USB, throughput may be limited.  But that is fine.

The USB-C port is a special console port, it can not be used as a 'normal' USB-C

As for USB-ethernet, the reason we are avoiding those is primarily due to performance + reliability.

    Pricing Update:

    • The final discussion around pricing still comes down to the initial MOQ (minimum order quantity). Our vendor said if we start buying parts in April/May and can do 5x of the MOQ required by them, we should be able to get a significant discount. (They can not guarantee anything beyond June/July or later)
    • If we can pre-purchase 5x MOQ, we should be able to deliver "very good" pricing to the initial orders.
    • We have roughly three weeks to go through all the testing with our vendor. (we don't need the full test to start pre-order)
    • Pre-sale will likely start on April 2 or April 9th.

I'm very interested in the fq_codel and Cake throughput numbers in Static mode.  As I remember, you published them for the Gold+, but I can't remember if that was before or after the pre-sale.  I would appreciate if you would publish those at the start of the pre-sale.  Thanks

The "prototype" can do 9.2/9.3 Gigabit with fq_codel or cake. (line rate, with IDS/IPS on and either 2000 or 20000 lines rules (IP layer)

We will publish the official numbers, once we test the "real board", likely this week or next

Since 10g will run so much hotter. Would it be wise to include the cpu and board temperatures displayable on the app with alarm abilities? It would help with ensuring good placement or issues with in rack mounts. A alarm between 70°C to 75°C for cpu temp.

Update on the upcoming 10Gb unit:
    • All board samples were functionally tested late last week and over the weekend. The fan holes on the case will need to be redesigned (nothing major)
    • We will start pre-sale on 4/2/2024 at 9am Pacific Time. Everyone who registers will receive an additional discount coupon via email. The final pricing will be available the week before the launch. (register here https://firewalla.com/goldpro)
    • The pricing will be good if we can complete the pre-sale and purchase parts in early April.
    • Our vendor likely to produce the unit in their Taiwan factory, moved the price up a bit but has import tax savings
