I remember how a friend from Apple shared a story how they engineered a custom battery geometry for MacBooks to achieve the best capacity they could while making the slimmest profile possible. That was quite a challenge! They could have chosen an off the shelf solution like others did. But they wanted to do the best they could. And I deeply respect that push for the best and not taking a beaten path.
Of course, FW does not have Apple’s resources. R&D is costly. And the temptation to just slap a fan on and call it a day is oh so real! I understand why they did what they did. It might be the best they could do given their resource constraints and that’s ok. On the other hand, there’s also something to be said about “you cut corners once, you cut them always”. Besides, one can dream, right? :)

The Gold Pro shouldn't have any issues with more than six WAN static IP's. Q S, please send help@firewalla.com an email, do a feature request and ask for Gold Pro.

Couple thoughts:
- Drop the HDMI and use DisplayPort (or even USB-C) and save the licensing costs? TBH, Id be fine with an old VGA. Lord knows I have enough of those still lying around, and probably will for a long, long time.
- Not having an SFP port makes this a lot harder for an MSP to leverage. And SFP adapters are stupid cheap these days if all you want is an RJ45 option.
- Size I doubt is much of an issue in most cases. Most end users have these setup loose on a shelf or in a rack (usually with spare room). 1U or 2U, as long as its rack mountable, I don't have a single client that will have an issue. I just hate it when I have a bunch of half sized appliances I have to stack because no one makes side-by-side appliances (aside from proprietary blades). I'd suggest going bigger (2U) just so you don't get people complaining about the noise when they set it up next to their PC.
- Could it be made with a removable top panel and board allowances that would allow after market ATX spec'd coolers: Intel/AMD ? That way final size and sound is up to the end user. Might cut costs if you can use a 'standard' cooling solution for production.
- Nobody cares about color in a corporate IT closet with the lights off. The less I have to look at a thing, the better.

Are there any features that you are considering adding that would benefit from the increased CPU processing power of this model? Such as CPU-intensive features that aren't viable in some existing products?
Realistically, few consumers presently have 10Gbps Internet available to them, but there are many potential customers with 1-2Gbps connections would could be enticed to purchase this product if the additional CPU processing power enabled functionality at 1-2Gbps that isn't feasible or viable on other models.

I’ve signed up for the presale. Just waiting. I have 10 Gbps from Ziply. Currently limited to 5 Gbps as I have a Gold Plus with two ports bonded in and out (5 Gbps in, 5 Gbps out. 10 gigabit Ethernet in and out is all I need to maximize my network. The extra 2.5 gigabit ports are just icing on the cake. You can get an SFP+ to 10 gigabit adapter (or dual SFP+ media converter) quite inexpensively. I’d rather keep the cost down that force people who will never use the SFP+ ports to pay for them. Having 10gigabit throughput at an affordable price point is a winning solution for most users that have internet service above 2.5 gigabit.

I am one waiting on the pricing as well. I have the original gold with 1 gig ports. They have recently brought fiber to my neighbor hood. I am now pegging out the gold. Im looking at the 10g for future proof instead of going with the 2.5g. I may have 5-10g in some years. $1000 i will probably get the 2.5g. Hopefully it will not have to be too much higher than the Gold plus 2.5.

I know I’m late to the party, but I’ve been waiting for a 10G router from Firewalla for quite a bit !
I’m a part of the SFP+ crowd. I don’t have 10GbaseT-compatible switches. I personally don’t require a 2.5G switch as I’m already equipped, like some other commenters. So, as far as I’m concerned, 2 x 2.5G is already plenty. -
@Firewalla: are you taking at least as many pre-orders as number of people signed up? I'm asking because I don't want to be in a situation where your website crashes because everyone is trying to purchase at the same time. After you get the notification email and coupon etc, how long do you have to complete the purchase? What happens if number of people trying to buy exceeds number of preorder signups? In other words is there a ceiling/ limit on how many pre-orders you will accept? Is there any purchase qty (per person) limit for pre-orders i.e. is it one unit per sign-up/ person? Any clarification on how this is going to work would be appreciated.

@GK, we are pretty experienced running pre-sales/crowdfunding; our ODM is fairly big, so they will be very happy to see more orders, and we will be happy to reserve even more parts to ensure future builds are under $1000.
(there will be a limit for sure, in case we ever reach that, we may add restrictions to orders; from our experience, this limit usually can't be reached on the first day)

Gonna deviate from the purpose of this thread for a second and give @Firewalla credit where due. I can think of few hardware vendors that have opened up to the community for feedback, done so in a transparent manner, and directly replied to EVERYONE's comments.
Whether or not I agree with the outcome, the way you approached this process was refreshing and with obvious good intent. Hopefully others on this thread can appreciate this reality at the very least. Good luck getting any other firewall vendor or even Ubiquiti to be this open about a new product release.
Clearly this culture @Firewalla makes me optimistic for the future.
