Can you consider swapping the POE ports? Making the 2.5 G port POE capable instead of the 10 G port?

10G Poe switches are well beyond most prosumer users

So if we're stuck wall mounting rather than mounting to the ceiling, we'd just need to face these towards expected client usage areas then?

My home setup is not ideal for cable runs and my options are very limited for where I can mount. If I can't face these towards higher traffic areas, would I be better off with the desktop model?

Might want to consider the use of a port to add external antennas so that people can buy their own antenna type?

@ejfahs, the 10G port also runs 2.5G and 1G and 5G, so it should work with a 2.5G POE switch

@ross sargent, yes if you are stuck with wall mount, you can face the unit towards your clients. (the area behind the wall, will not be so good)

@Troy Dampier All the antenna's are integrated, there is no option to stick something out. (at least we have not seen any ceiling mounted AP with that feature)

I feel the PoE port should be aligned to provide the best performance back to the FW Router. I would guess this is 10G. Otherwise one would need to run two cables.

It would be very helpful to have a visualization of the antennae patterns for the growing family of Firewalla access points. I understand different bands have different patterns. I’ve always admired and have been a customer since the release of the Purple because of the openness of the company.

@J C, What kind of antennae patterns are you looking for?

The desktop version will radiate all around, and the ceiling mount will radiate down ...

@firewalla Do you know the operational temperature of the ceiling AP? I have a one-story house in Florida, and it would be nice to mount the APs above the ceiling for better disbursement.

@UGrant, will get the details once we finalize everything.

What do you mean by "APs above the ceiling?" it will be in attic?

@firewalla. Yes, in the attic. I have had some Aruba 515 APs in the past, and they have high-temperature tolerances, so they perform well in that hot space.

The numbers we have is pretty high, I am having the team double check. May I know how hot your attic may become?

@firewalla. It can get up to 130 on the worst Florida days.  The Aruba AP-515 has an operational temperature range of -40°C to +70°C or -40°F to +158°F

Will the ceiling mount be able to screw to a single gang box? I've wired my home with them throughout and it's a perfect solution without having to drill holes or screw anchors.

Also.... Take my money and give me 4 :)

Yes, you can screw into a single gang (using two screws) or double gang box (using four screws)

Can it be powered via a POE+ capable gigabit switch?

When you say it radiates down, is this a wide cone that can go through adjacent rooms (open air or drywall)? I've only seen ceiling mount in an office, and they are usually 15 feet apart in an open Floorplan.

Let me get some radiation graphs. (Usually, the ceiling mount is wide to the side and weak on the top, the ceiling side.) How to place them depend on your wall and doors and materials.

Do we know what the client limit is for these? I have around 80 iot devices and another 20-30 regular devices. I’d spread them out over 3 access points. Also would you need a managed switch to get the VLAN capability?

In theory (from the ASIC vendor), each frequency band can support up to 128 devices, And we do have real-world tests that support >100 devices (mixed type) per AP.

You need a managed switch only if you have devices on the ethernet want to do VLAN. If it is all WiFi, a firewalla unit + AP7 will work just fine

Do you think they will handle remote play like Steam link or PlayStation portal well? My Eero 6 Pro struggle even with wired back haul
