Multi-mode fiber connection between the Firewalla Gold Plus SFP and the Firewalla Switch X, with prototype ears for the Gold Plus SFP.

(Gold Plus SFP ears will be coming later, as an add-on, purchased separately. Price is unknown, but should be cheaper than Gold Pro ears.)

I'm building an ADU and planning to run ethernet between the new building and my house. If I wanted to run fiber can you tell me what kind of cable I would need to buy? I have no experience with this but it seems like I should go ahead and run it with the ethernet as well.

John Harrold  Not an expert but from what I've read from others it is typically suggested to avoid copper between buildings due to grounding issues, so fiber would be better. A low voltage conduit is the way to go however since then you can run whatever you want and change it when the need arises.

John Harrold single mode fibers (yellow fibers) are good for long distances. You will need to pair up with single mode SFP+ modules on both sides to make it work. Personally, if it is not too expensive, it's good to run another pair of copper Ethernet too.

Aaron Dickinson For small businesses (like big warehouses / industrial buildings), we do recommend fiber. Not that expensive and are fairly good towards interference from heavy machinery.

Also, it is perfectly okay to use RJ45/Copper for shorter distances too.

edit: we also see fiber used in luxery homes from our MSP partners, who install/manage everything.

I was a little late in ordering a Swtich SE. Any idea when the next order or preorder will come around?

Due to a chip shortage, late PCB production (due to AI hogging production lines), we are not sure when we will have the switch SE available (some of the later switch SE units may get delivered in October/November now). Switch X is still good to order (for now)

I as well ordered an SE switch as a spare on my network for single point failures and that was maybe a week ago. Is there a way to check the status on receiving that switch? It’s not a requirement that I have it tomorrow by any means but I just am curious on how to track the order itself and status so I can check on occasion.

I would consider the X for future proofing, but I’m concerned about fan noise. My network equipment is in an office/bedroom closet and I’m concerned about the fan. The closet has hollow core closet doors. Would the X fans be noticeable?

If the Switch X is inside a cabinet that has a door, you are unlikely to hear anything outside. (Unless the cabinet gets very hot, then the fan will likely spin louder)

@Todd Dukeshier, my switchX is A LOT quieter than my gen 1 unifi US-24-250w (a 24 port POE switch). I'd say the SwitchX is quieter than the Synology NAS in the same area.

I'm really liking my Switch X, its making me regret not getting more switches to replace my UI gear.  Just waiting for orders to open up again for SE...

Does anyone know if there's a back door way to power the switch with POE?  I know it limits the power budget, but I like how the "Flex 2.5G PoE" product can take wall power or POE-IN and would love to replace it with FW.

It is not possible at the moment. These switches does a lot more local processing for visibility and control, a typical PoE++ (may be PoE+++ can ...) not enough.

Due to hardware (ACL) requirements to switching chips, not possible in near term to produce cheaper units with lower ports and still keep the security features

Given the chip-apocalypse is there any chance of new switches coming out in the next 6-12 months?

I have a bunch of drops that I'm using my old UniFi 24 PoE (1 gbe) and not getting inter-device monitoring.

Is there any investigation into bigger switches...say 16-24 ports that are 2.5G copper and maybe minimal PoE (PoE+, say for cameras and such....not high end APs)? I can use the Switch X for my Wi-Fi 7 APs and 10G connections, and would prefer a single 2.5G for all my other devices.

For sure, we are looking for a bigger switch with slower ports. Still chasing our ODM partners and see when they can realistically manufacture these. The switch SE, for example, was committed for shipping in October, and now they commit only a partial shipment in October, and the rest in November. (due to switch CPU + PCB delays)

The uncertainty is so bad, we no longer do any pre-sale, since the units arriving to us will be much more expensive when we started the pre-sale.

firewalla That's excellent news. Just for reference, the TP-Link Omada SG3218XP-M2 V2 is the type of switch I’m referring to. $499 US list, on sale for $370 in the Omada store.

    4× 2.5G PoE++ ports (up to 90 W PoE out per port)
    12× 2.5G PoE+ ports (up to 30 W PoE out per port)
    2× 10G SFP+ slots
    240 W total PoE budget

Since firewalla does a lot more at layer2 than traditional switches, it is not possible to run that many ports, keep track of everything, and still keep the price that low. (Unless the AI boom is over, and there are a lot more left over manufacturing capacities).

I recieved my Switch X earlier this week and got it setup, was pretty painless and far easier assigning trunk/vlan ports than an old netgear switch I had!

Only thing is I can hear some rattle going on in it and think its the little fans on it are these user replacable or is the best thing to send it back?

If you hear a scratchy/rattling noise from 2 or 3ft away with your ear pointing to the switch, it is normal. We are running these fan's at low speed, so it will do that. If you are a bit far away, you shouldn't hear it.
