Please due explore. It's usually a good idea to at least have a 1-year warranty on a product at this price range. It's fine for it to be a separate purchase. That way people can choose the best warranty for them. Thank you

30 day warranty default (some states may require more) with 1-5 year warranty options for additional cost due within first 30 day window. Assurant or SquareTrade should be able to help with the warranty options (I've worked with both in the past).

No matter what you do re warranty, someone is going to skip it, then have an issue and get sore that they can't buy the warranty after the fact to cover their mistakes. From a manufacturers perspective it's always a headache at some point.

Regarding the constant concern of fans, I've got servers that have been running the same fans since the early 90s. I've got network switches and APs with fans in concrete factories, rock quarries, metal fabrication shops and auto shops. The fans generally aren't the problem you seem to think they are. But those are also enterprise grade fans and the units are placed out of the way (rarely in enclosures). Good fans don't just fail. It really has a lot to do with WHERE you place the device.

Now, if you want to talk about where things fail, look at high humidity locations like greenhouses, egg processors, or gyms with swimming pools!

Firewalla has said repeatedly that these will be standard normal fans, so even if one croaks out it's trivial to swap. I would want an alarm to trigger though so I know before the unit cooks itself!

Our standard warranty is 1 year, we are not going to make it 30 days. I've already forwarded the extended warranty idea to our team and see what they think.

    Important Update:

    • We may be able to lower the pre-order price to the lower end of $800 (With the launch coupon, you should be able to get the unit at $7xx)
    • The launch coupon will be sent to everyone either Thursday or Friday (USA/Pacific Time) this week. It can only be used in the first 24 hours of the launch. (from 4/2/2024 9AM to 4/3/2024 9AM PACIFIC TIME) There are no exceptions to this window.
    • We may limit the number of units you can order.
    • All pre-orders will get an extra six months of warranty (our standard is 1 year). (starting from the day you receive the unit)
    • We are working on the product page, and looking forward to the launch

@Firewalla Woo Hoo! Exciting times! …now I have to figure out what to do with the rack mount I have for my Firewalla Gold.

@Firewalla, is the Gold Pro is designed to fit in the Gold Rack Mount?

It seems like if Port 1 is at the far left of the mount opening, it seems like the Console port and possibly the HDMI port should fit.

@Firewalla, have you determined if the rack mount ears will include keystone slots and, if so, how many on each side?

@Eibensl, there are two options, and we will likely vote on them after the gold pro pre-sale.

    1. Simple rabbit ears, just two plates, shouldn't be too expensive.
    2. One side is a small mounting tray for the power brick, and the other is a 5 or 6-key stone patch panel. This one may be expensive.

We don't know the pricing yet. Both are not standard parts, so the tooling fee will be much higher for (2) than (1)

We do have some quick prototypes; will get some photos

Personally I think that I am not going to rack mount this white beauty, but instead I will put it on top of a table for everyone to see.
For others: Rabbit ears to keep it undet 999.99 USD?

    @Firewalla Ears, please, <1K$
Please, make the unit big to dissipate heat! Have screw inserts for an extra top-mounted fan, please!?

FYI, here are the "official" performance numbers for the Gold Pro.

    • We were pretty surprised that CAKE and FQ_CODEL are somewhat at line rate ...
    • PPPoE is still at 3.2Gbits. If you have 10Gbit PPPoE, it is best run the ISP router in bridge mode
    • WireGuard is >2Gbits
    • OpenVPN is 500Mbits

These numbers may improve before shipping.

@Veli, OpenVPN is 500mbits, it is already being accelerated by Intel AES; WireGuard is 2Gigabit, this protocol is multi-threaded.

    @Firewalla,

I'm still concerned about the PPPoE!

Bridge mode on Bell Routers isn't feasible! Hence they claim they do for business accounts (but it's a joke) still not true bridge rather disabling services..

I have 8Gbps Symmetrical, and dropping the speed to 3.2Gbps is a huge drop,  are you  going to optimize the PPPoE ?

    Regards,

    @Ram!

There is still room to optimize PPPoE; How much, I do not know. We still have a couple of months to ready the beta image.

    Update

    • At the moment, the pre-sale price is $799 (additional discounts with the launch coupon, like $40 + 6-month extra warranty)
    • We are still playing with spreadsheets ... pre-sale pricing may be even lower.
    • Your coupon will be sent out on Friday.

When will the normal price (not pre-sale price) be published during the pre-sale? Will need to decide if tying money up for 8 or 9 months is worth buying at pre-sale vs waiting for release “regular “ price.

We usually can't publish the "normal" selling price until we build the "none presale units." At the moment, we are going to put $999 as the normal sales price (since the system needs one); And this is our target price, it may be lower or higher than this.

The final price also depends on things we can't control, like the USA election (which may impact tariffs), the AI bubble (parts price), Red Sea problems (shipping), and inflation.

(AI bubble is a personal comment ... please ignore if you think there isn't one)

Will some of the PPPoE optimizations you're doing make it into the other products too? It's nonideal that I have to do double NAT (having the ISP "modem" do the PPPoE) with my gold to get the full 1 gigabit throughput of my fiber connection as the gold can't maintain that for data coming from the LAN (yes you have extensively looked into my machine and it is a limitation of the PPPoE implementation).

@Jao van de Lagemaat, it depends if we find anything new with our work on the Gold Pro.

PPPoE is single-threaded, so its limitation is single-core performance.

If you are running the Gold, make sure you turn off the smart queue, and it should get you closer to the gigabit. (both fq_codel and cake tend to slow down PPPoE a bit)

PPPoE testing via "speedtest" may also distort testing a bit. We use iperf3, which measures raw IP speed.

Thanks, I do indeed have that turned off after the Firewalla folks and I discovered the bad interaction between the two some time ago. It still does not reach full gigabit from LAN connected machines (typically only 600 to 700 Mbit upload and 800 Mbit down) though while that works perfectly fine with the ISP box in front and in double NAT giving 945 down and 900 up! Testing done to the exact same speedtest servers (I can't set up a iperf3 server at my ISP alas).

I'm super impressed that "We were pretty surprised that CAKE and FQ_CODEL are somewhat at line rate ... ".  One of the reasons I am looking at the Gold Pro is its CPU for running CAKE.

What is the Gold Plus (which I have) CAKE and FQ_CODEL performance?  I thought you published them for the Gold Plus pre-sale, but couldn't locate them.  And they aren't published on current the Gold Plus product page.

FQ_CODEL on the gold plus is "line rate" for sure. CAKE may be a bit slower. (we usually don't publish CAKE data, since we don't have many users who have it on).

Our rack mount manufacturer made these rabbit ears for us. They are prototypes only so that we can take photos. The rabbit ears may or may not have the patch panel on the right. The left side should be able to hold the power brick. We can also make a pair of really simple mounting plates (we'll do a quick vote after we have the full design and quote from the factory).

We will make these units available before you get the Gold Pro (we'll ask the community to help us decide their final look and feel).

How about just blank, but able to hold the power brick? Patch panel should be unnecessary.

I concur with the prior poster. A 6-port patch panel serves no purpose. For a patch panel to be useful (i.e., eliminate the need for a separate or larger patch panel), it needs to have at least 12 if not 16 ports. If 12+ ports isn’t feasible, then I would much rather just have a holder for the power brick.
