Did you turn on safe search on DDG? or google? I am a bit confused on what is working and what is not

Safe search is only "on" on the FWG.  Google and DDG safe search are turned off.  With that I get images through the FWG safe search using Google but I do not get images (they are filtered by the FWG safe search) using DDG.  If I turn off the FWG safe search then the images appear just fine using DDG.

First, there is no firewalla safe search.

When you turn on safe search on a device, firewalla will make sure DDG or Google turn on safe search when search.

So in your case, DDG is blocking the images instead of firewalla.

So I turned off safe search in the DDG settings and had the safe search turned on with the FWG app.  You're saying that turning on the safe search using the Firewalla app overrides the DDG settings and re-enables the safe search even though I've got it turned off?  If so, that explains the root cause.  I guess I'll just leave safe search off on the couple of devices where I want to see the image rendering in DDG.

I have noticed the same problem (missing image thumbnails) when "force safe search" for DuckDuckGo is set on the Firewalla. There may be a bug in the Firewalla implementation for DDG safe search: To force safe search at the network level, DDG says to map duckduckgo.com to safe.duckduckgo.com. On the Firewalla, it appears to me that the domain external-content.duckduckgo.com is also getting mapped to an IP associated with safe.duckduckgo.com. The web service at that IP does not know how to handle requests to external-content.duckduckgo.com, hence the empty thumbnails.

I also tried making a custom DNS rule for external-content.duckduckgo.com on the Firewalla; unfortunately, it seems that the safe search control trumps it.

    Update:

I tried turning off safe search for DDG, and implemented DDG's recommended approach myself by following https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360056024294-Guide-How-to-customize-Firewalla-DNS-service. It seems to work.
