Latency spikes
Hi,
I've got issues with latency spikes causing issues in applications such as zoom. They happen every few minutes. I'm testing with some simple pings noting the issues seen in ping happen at the same time zoom has issues.
I have a firewalla gold.
The problem occurs when connected via ethernet cable or wifi (the access point is also connected to the firewalla) when I ping the local g/w, cloudflare dns, or another device on my LAN. The problem occurs from multiple devices on the LAN though sometimes the latency spikes between the devices do not exactly correlate but usually do.
In a ping the issue looks like this (local gateway):
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=43 ttl=64 time=0.700 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=44 ttl=64 time=0.645 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=45 ttl=64 time=0.698 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=46 ttl=64 time=0.420 ms
Request timeout for icmp_seq 47
Request timeout for icmp_seq 48
Request timeout for icmp_seq 49
Request timeout for icmp_seq 50
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=47 ttl=64 time=4300.094 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=48 ttl=64 time=3295.279 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=49 ttl=64 time=2338.093 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=50 ttl=64 time=1334.374 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=51 ttl=64 time=330.465 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=52 ttl=64 time=0.965 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=53 ttl=64 time=1.224 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.141.1: icmp_seq=54 ttl=64 time=0.845 ms
I have rebooted the firewalla device, swapped the WAN port (though it also happens to the local gateway and between devices on the same LAN), swapped all cables, disabled most services.
The problem does not occur when you ping the same cloudflare dns server from the firewalla box itself (ssh to the box and run from there). It does not occur when removing the firewalla device from the network. Based on this, and that it occurs when pinging the local gateway I have ruled out an issue with the internet connection itself as being the cause.
I have never seen the load average on the firewalla above 1.8, usually much lower below 1 (top) when the issue is occurring so don't believe it to be a load issue.
I am thinking my next step is a factory reset but welcome any advice on how I might troubleshoot this further or indeed solve it.
Thanks!

On the ethernet tests, what is the pat of the packet? is it test host -> firewalla, or there is something in between? if there is something in between, what is that? have you ever tried to reboot it?
If a direct ping from a host to firewalla (with no switches or bridges in between) then let me know, I can help you open a ticket right here
