You don't need to use the Wi-Fi SD for WAN failover; the orange has WiFi-WAN, you can use that. (it is a wifi 7 WAN)

I saw you said the orange would work for "small apartments or houses" (around 1000 square feet for a wood framed house). If the orange won't, do you have anything available, or in the works, that will handle up to 2000 square feet (maybe close to 3000 if you include the basement) - wood/sheetrock built house (3 floors if you include the basement)?

I would love to be able to settle on something instead of rolling the dice on the router of the day to provide coverage I need/want.

In my search for Wi-Fi coverage, I may have missed it but I do also work from home some times. My current router and Purple is not beside me...or even on the same floor - it is on the first floor, my "office" is on the second floor.

I look forward to hearing from you!
    Thanks in advance!

Alpine725 if you are in a bigger house, the firewalla AP7's are really good units, https://firewalla.com/products/firewalla-ap7. These units mesh really well.

AP7's can easily connect to your purple as the controller as well.

Also, please be aware that the quoted 1000 sqft is just something sort of measured, and how much exactly depends on the materials of the walls. There is no scientific way to measure these things. (We are going to quote around 1000sqft, so it can also work 1500, if you are not demanding)

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly!

I understand that when it comes to Wi-Fi signals and coverages, it 100% depends on home construction.

I was actually reading up on the AP7 but was confused as to whether it would suit my needs.

Will the Orange help my situation or will it provide the same solution as the Purple?

I currently have my modem --> Purple --> Ubiquiti UDR (Unifi Dream Router). I'd love to be able to replace the UDR and only have one thing to manage.

    Thanks again!!

Without knowing how your house is built, it is not possible. But in theory if you have a basement and 3 floors, it is pretty hard to get good wifi with just one unit.

My house is a modular, "stick built" house (wood and sheetrock). 2 living levels and a basement. 3 bedrooms on the top floor, living room, dining room and kitchen on the main floor and a basement. My current setup is in the living room.

Are you running fine with the UDR? if you are, then likely you just need one AP7 unit. (one-to-one replacement). The Orange power output (due to its size) is unlikely to match the UDR or AP7.  (but, if you just have one floor, or may be two, the orange may work).

    Just asking :

    - no 6ghz ?

    - Would prefer if there is active cooling with Thermoelectric heat pumps using the thermoelectric effect, specifically the Peltier effect,

    - i assume, its exactly what my original purple does but x3 better performant , and 1/4 of the performance of gold se in my home

    - Travel, home extension , and in office , so at least it can double up.

ive the gl-inet slate ax7 , and when traveling its really really really powerful device, though advertised as wifi 7, i would wish it had the 6Ghz band as much as possible.
That paired with the purple for security, most of my business travel or leisure is amazing for backing up iphotos or google stuff.

Yes, the UDR is holding down the Wi-Fi fort, so to speak - both upstairs and in the basement.

Having discussed coverage, does AP7 or Orange have a client limit? I think, between the kids, the kids' friends and all the gadgets and doo-dads, I am pushing 30 to 50 connected things.

You will have no issue with either unit. The AP7's can handle more than >100 (real world tested) and Orange works > 60 (real world testing too)

In theory, but can handle much more

Interesting forums, firewalla has man child downvoting comments out of spite ? I'm bring up those points not because it's stupid query, so whomever felt "compelled " , I guess you don't know much as well

@firewalla. There's no way to get it to use better cooling package to get 6ghz ?

Looks awesome! I’m curious why the purple is increasingly uneconomical to build, but the orange isn’t? Is it just certain components or chips that the purple uses that are harder to secure? I’m not super techy, so I apologize if this is already obvious. Insta purchase for me : ) Thanks for the help!!

(Global DDR4 memory shortage + Purple CPU expensive to get) * Random China Tariff = Purple's problem

The most crazy one is the "random tariff"

Manny Cavalier Check out their video on the orange, i guess it. does warrant the trade offs for not having the 6ghz chipset.

bummer as it maybe, still a good viable option on the go and travel, since it can do docker , that means unifi controller as well .

Jen Fox Don't get me wrong, I love all the Firewalla features, but Orange could have been a perfect travel router for me only if it had the 6Ghz band. If you are in a hotel or condo/apartment environment, when you try to scan all the wi-fi signals around you, mostly, end-user devices are only in either 2.4 or 5 Ghz. You could only wish there is an available 6Ghz where you can use all by yourself without any interference.

Manny Cavalier nah, im with you on this,

ive the slate 7 from gl-inet, was hoping Orange could have a 6ghz version , as my travel will be much nicer .,

That said, wifi 7 base chipsets ARE indeed powerful , and capable. Like you  was crossing my fingers if they could get the specs ,

for now, we will have to wait next year for something better to be compact enough to get the 6ghz,

closet ive come across is only Unifi Express 7 which is HUGE.....

It is not possible to build a travel size WiFi / router with 2.4/5/6ghz, it will be "BIG". If you really want 6ghz, best is just get AP7, I don't think it is travel friendly.

There's an existing 5G mobile/pocket wifi from Netgear (I guess M7 Pro is the model # - not 100% sure) which supports all the 3 bands including the 6Ghz.  In terms of its size, it can still fit in a pocket.  I know it doesn't have the features of the Orange, but I guess and I hope that Firewalla can also make something like this in the future.

Other than constraint by heat, your firewalla still need to chew traffic at 2Gbit, and everything has to be affordable.

Update: 11/18/2025We are facing a 2GB DDR4 memory shortage, where a simple memory chip price has increased more than 10x. In order to bring the Orange to you at a reasonable discount, we are going to push the pre-sale date until we can secure these memory chips. Our ODM partner is working hard, and hopefully, we can start the pre-sale middle of December. (This date may be pushed even further if we can't get a batch of reasonably priced memory)

Yeah, the AI and clouders are buying and pre-buying EVERY DIMM they can sometimes buying entire years production runs from the tier 1 vendors. These vendors are also exiting the DDR4 space to make the more profitable DDR5 and others which is compounding the shortages. I expect no relief in 2026 either. Maybe you have to consider using DDR5 bc that’s all the tier 1 will be making soon.

Many networking/embedded CPU's do not support DDR5 unfortunately.

Sigh. Unfortunately, that fact is going to really hurt many, many smaller innovators like Firewalla. It took me several weeks this summer on eBay sourcing used DDR4 ECC pRAM for a single project bc the OEMs pricing was untenable. Seems like Samsung, Micron, or skHynix would see the opportunity and keep a DDR4 fab online but HBM is even more profitable than DDR5. Server vendor are now at the point of 50-75% of a GP servers costs is pRAM!

This is something I follow closely bc of my work. I hope you find a tier 1 or 2 vendor that can help. Be cautious of lower tier vendors bc of varying reliability issues.

    FYI:

The first Orange build will be extremely limited in quantity. Subsequent builds will likely be the same and limited by the amount of 2GB DDR4 memory chips we can obtain from our ODM.

The first build will be all FCC/USA due to an exceptionally short build cycle.

Will the RAM on the Orange be soldered? If not, do the CPU and chipset have support for larger memory sizes?
