Purple and AP7

I just received my Purple unit and desktop AP7.  Since the Purple has short range wifi I was hoping to have a single desktop AP7 sitting solo on a shelf to extend wifi range without being connected to Purple with CAT cable.  Is this possible or do I need 2 AP7s?

  At minimum one AP7 need to connect via ethernet to the purple for "wifi mesh" to work with other AP7 units.
