Firewalla AP7 Performance
PinnedSince wifi performance can be influenced by so many things, we are going to publish numbers based on
- Shielded room (blocking out all other AP's)
- Use iPhone 16 and OnePlus (Android) as test clients (when there are strange things, we use an ACER laptop to test as well)
- Distance 3ft away (limit of the shielded room)
- We use iPerf3 tests running on firewalla to Gold Pro, client running raw iPerf3 or Firewalla WiFi test
- The test client will be placed at angles 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees
- Even in a shielded room, the variance to some tests are +/- 10%
- This data is for your reference only
- While doing the testing part, the AP7 also recording LAN traffic. (security)
6Ghz:
- iPhone 16 (160Mhz): Tx 1.8Gbit, Rx 1.55Gbit
- OnePlus (320Mhz): Tx 3Gbit, Rx 3Gbit
5Ghz
- iPhone 16: Tx 1.7Gbit, Rx 1.6Gbit
- OnePlus: Tx 1.7Gbit, Rx 1.7Gbit
2.4Ghz
- iPhone 16: Tx 150Mbit, Rx 160Mbit
- OnePlus: Tx 400Mbit, Rx 135Mbit (*)
- Acer Laptop: Tx 400Mbit, Rx 360Mbit

@Firewalla: regarding the throughput on 2.4GHz and 5GHz vs range, is there any chance you will do some "real world" tests with the clients at 10 feet (close range) and then say 40 feet (distance) from the AP?
The 3 feet test in a chamber, doesn't really give an idea of how this hardware performs in the real world.Since this is a white box unit, surely the ODM has already done this kind of testing and has some results you can publish? Otherwise the only option is to wait for you to provide review units to the major tech. websites - they will do the "real world" throughput testing. What is the timeline for you to provide review units to these websites?

10ft, not much difference than 3. 40ft is pretty fast too, we just can't get reliable/quotable performance, the reason is, our office building is 2.4gbit crowded. What I can tell you is, our unit is very close to other wifi 7 devices.
As of "real world" testing, we can't find a stable environment that's realistic to replicate all the tests. (except in a chamber). 2.4ghz for example, highly depend if our neighbors are active, and if we do it at night, we don't know if you will call that realistic.
So, hopefully beta can give us some good real world numbers ...

@Firewalla: I'm going to ask one last time. Now that the hardware is in customer's hands, can you tell us what CPU (frequency, number of Cores) and how much RAM, Flash capacity is in the AP7? And what about MLO support? Yes or no for MLO?
PS: If you delete my post, then I will know I can proceed to purchase competing offerings (of which there are many), where the device vendor discloses the HW specs. -
@GK, we just made our datasheet, you can see it here https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/37962250524691-Firewalla-AP7-Datasheet-Desktop-and-Ceiling
We do not disclose CPU/Flash/Memory for WiFi units. MLO will be supported in the future, at the moment, we can't find a good client that will use the MLO function reasonably, so either we need to tune the AP7, or the clients are just not ready.

@Doug, there is no right answer to this common question; It really depends on so many different factors, such as where you are placing the unit and the room type. The best way to test is to place different branded unit in the exact place and test. Remember, the test result here may not be reproducible at another physical location, since each unit's antenna is different, handling interference is different, and placement of the unit may be different.
