The Speed of OpenVPN depends on a few things

    1. your upload speed on your internet.  (when you are VPN home, you are doing a traffic turn around)

    2. the VPN encryption speed. (which is around 120mbit on the gold)

    3. If you have other stuff active on your network, that may consume CPU.

Is it possible to have the non-VPN traffic go outside the VPN tunnel for OpenVPN? I believe that's what's causing the significant drop in internet speed if I am connected via OpenVPN.

As I mentioned previously, the internet speed is fast if I connect the 2 Firewalla boxes using the VPN Client feature.

There is something called the "outbound policy" if you are setting up the VPN client.   If you have it set to VPN, everything goes to VPN.  If direct, then only subnet over on the otherside will go through VPN, local traffic will stay local.

I think there is a misunderstanding.  The VPN client feature in the Firewalla app is working well for me, connecting the 2 Firewalla boxes with great speeds.  It is the the app OpenVPN that's causing the significant slow down of the internet speed if the device is connected using the OpenVPN app.

@Nelson, you said that when you're connect from your phone / iPad using OpenVPN , your internet speed is about 5 mbps right ?

So, let's say that you're connecting to your Firewalla gold at your home, and I don't know your ISP and internet link speed, but let's say that you have like me a link of 100mbps... and this link upload is 6 mbps (the upload link for home seems to be the 6 mbps even if you have 1Gbps  download speed)... so if you're connected to this link, that means your Firewalla will have a bottleneck of 6 mbps max!

That said, you may consider also that 6 mbps upload link is shared with your home devices as well, and your phone/iPad will have the max download speed of 6 mbps max!

    Hope this help !
