FYI, we put two possible rack mounts together and will be part of the "Gold Pro Early Access" survey in early May. (No need to vote now, but if you do have comments, please let us know)

    A: Simple ears, likely $19 (+/- $5)

B: The power brick tray to the left and right side is a 6-port patch panel, $49 to $59

The power brick holder from B with a simple ear from A would be heavenly! Or I buy B, move the ISP links to that patch and blank out the rest.

How about offer both? It should only be three different pieces, no? Sell them individually and solve for all.

The mold to fold the rack mounting trays is incredibly expensive, we can only make one style.

The C option is possible, but the final price for that is likely only $5 less than B.

What Robert said!!!! Sell the individual pieces and we can all decide what we want!

Every piece of gear I have purchased (except for Firewalla) comes with basic rack ears, no extra charge. If I have to spend an extra $60 for rack ears I don’t want, I will probably rethink the entire Firewalla purchase. This is why the opinions of potential customers are more important than ones who have already bought. (I thought I reading somewhere that a poll would be taken for the early bird purchasers only.)

The basic rack ears should be a given. Basic rack ears should only be one unique piece, no?

The basic ears come from one mold, hence is cheaper to make.

Option B preferred. Would compare cost against a shelf mount

Option B. But I suggest there's another version where the patch panel is on the left side.

We will add option C to the voting options. (Noting option C is likely just few dollars cheaper than B)

To B or not to B?
    I choose B.
    I need those perfect holes.
    I can cover them easily,
but I can't drill square holes.
    B

How about including the basic ears with the Firewalla (like every other rack mount device) and have the other ears as an extra purchase?

I don’t think I have ever purchased a rack mount device that didn’t come with basic ears.

@Robert, we don't want to add extra cost to people who are not rack mounting the Gold Pro.

I agree. Although other manufacturers include those basic ears out of the box, they already include their cost in the total price of the unit. So this is just a fair deal for the rest who are not going to rack mount this.

@Robert Kobbeman The Firewall isn't a rackmount device though. There is a difference between something is is rack mountable and a rackmount device and that seems to be where you are getting confused. This is just a device that *can* be rack mounted for those who wish, but was designed to be placed on a desk or shelf. I know of many network products that are like that, designed for a desk but have rackmount capability . Almost none of them come with any kind of "basic rack ears", and the only ones that do are nearly the size of a rack device already.

My vote is for option C.

My thinking is that if this is being rack mounted, I'm gonna have a rack with a patch panel. But I'd still like somewhere to put the power brick so it isn't hanging there.

I am seriously interested in this unit with the following input.

    1.  RAM - end users should be able to update this at our expense fully supported by Firewalla (current Gold users will break hard reinstallation doing this 4GB -> 8GB)
    2.  Internal storage - supported if installed - gold units have this capability - not supported
    3.  I have many other questions mainly in relation to Zeek but this is not the forum for it.

I will preorder this unit Firewalla when my budget allows.

    Regards

If it has provisions for rack ears, it is rack mountable. Every device I have purchased in the past five years (maybe longer) that had provisions for rack ears, came with rack ears.

I’m amazed that a 10g rack mountable firewall from 2024 isn’t coming with the basic ears in the box.

How about option B and a cardboard cover.
That gives B & C in an inexpensive way.

Have you considered the ability of the rack mount bracket to have the firewalla attached offset? i.e., including an extra row of screw holes in the bracket. This would benefit those who have cabinets with little room between the front of the unit and the door.
