Are all my devices are exposed by having ".lan"? mDNS?

I'm not sure how to explain this question other than to say I used an app called Advanced IP Scanner and noticed all of my devices are visible to it because of their ".lan" name.

I remember that's something Firewalla does -- mDNS? Is this something that can be disabled or just enabled for devices I want to be reachable that way?

  If you are scanning on the LAN, all devices will be visible. I don't see any way around that.
