Purple major issues since the Jun 6th update?
I have one customer using the purple and it has been completely unstable since Jun 6th, last internet test was completed at Jun 6 at 2:40 am and the firmware was updated at 7:40 and for the last 5 days it has not been able to complete a test, the log shows nothing but high packet losses and occasionally ISP drops. Customer isn't happy and while I'd like to think this is an ISP problem the coincidence that you guys pushed an update right when this started doesn't bode well for this fw release. Now I have to make a 2 hour drive to replace this device and as I recall the last purple I installed for another customer had to be replaced too but I've never had issues with the Gold versions I have installed. Is there a known issue being worked on as I type or will I have make this long drive which will waste an entire day?

I am an existing user of several FW Golds and just bought a Purple for travel. After successfully setting up at home a couple weeks ago, I have not had any success using this device while traveling. Wifi WAN to Wifi LAN. Passed a few flows for a couple minutes yesterday, nothing since. Maybe this is related?

Have you looked at this article? https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360023771674-Traveling-with-Firewalla
The key step is connecting to the firewalla WIFI (LAN) before interacting with the captive portal. And if anything goes wrong, turn off DoH

Hi there, I have also been getting intermittent issues with my firewalla Purple SE. i have set this up in router mode and the connection seems to drop quite often or get huge packet losses. i have reset to factory settings and the problem persists,
currently I have bypassed the firewall in order to get my internet back without issues. Can you please advise?

If you have the same problem at the same time daily, it may be a rule issue or something else. I'd suggest do this first
1. Look at your WAN health and see if it is a WAN issue https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/4413511352083-Network-Performance-and-Quality-Monitoring
2. Next look at the LAN side https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360053534593-How-to-debug-network-connectivity-issues-
If these steps can't help you look at the issue, please contact our support help@firewalla.com

It is definitely the firewalla. There have been zero configuration or rule changes other than the software update. I'm supporting the device remotely. I can connect to the ISP and see the modem is online but the firewalla is completely inaccessible and I can't see anything. I was able to walk my 70 year old mother through setting up a different known good router and the internet has been fine since.

I have been traveling for a week and had no luck using the Firewalla Purple and several different hotels and venues. I was poking around different settings and found SOURCE NAT was off. I turned that on and BAM. Success. I'm not sure if it was off by default or if that was in the setup sequence but either way, so far so good. I will report back regarding general stability...

Also in my case the Firewalla (Purple) is buggy since the last update. Normally I have 180 mbit download and 30 mbit upload with my internet provider. Since the update I still have 180 mbit download but only 0,0x mbit upload.
After plugging and unplugging ports a few times, the message "The speed of wan port decreases to 100 mbps" came up. After that I had 90 mbit download and 30 mbit upload.
A few more times off and on the ports, then the message "The speed of wan port increases to 1 gbps" came. Yes, and surprise, the upload was again unusable at 0,0x mbit :(The problem must come from the firewalla. Because when I remove the firewalla from my network, everything runs perfectly again.

I have the same issue with by Firewalla Purple in relation to excessive upstream packet loss which has come on since the Jun 6th update. If the WAN interface NIC is set to 1GBits the device is practically unusable. I have used my switch to hard set the interface to 100MBits and the performance is much improved though the packet loss is not fully gone. It’s not cables. Raised a ticket but would love to downgrade the box firmware. Not using Smart Queue. Feels like an issue with traffic shaping algorithm in upstream direction.
Update 24/06
I resolved the small amount of residual packet loss to be duplex mismatch where the Firewalla decided to run 100M half duplex on the WAN interface even though the switch was running 100M full duplex. I was a bit surprised by that because I swore that I set my switch to run 100M/auto on the WAN interface, anticipating that the Firewalla would be running auto-negotiation too. My only way to discover this mismatch (without delving in ssh console) was to look in the Firewall logs where you can search for the WAN interface NIC configuration).

I have the same issue, I have a firewalla purple and since the update I'm having packet loss and a very low (less than 1Mbps) upload speed, I was with the ISP's support yesterday and connected directly to their router and got full speed, so it's the firewalla, 1st time I have issues with it.

@Firewalla, are you kidding me/us? After all of the above identical issues being reported, along with my identical issue, you need to make sure it's not our network before you can admit there might be something wrong with your last update?
My box updated on the 16th but it wasn't until earlier yesterday (22nd) that I started to experience network issues. What I found was my POE switch had no power and would not power on, so I thought easy fix. When we still had spotty internet, all of my testing led me to the box where my upstream was pathetic.
I have a backup wifi connection directly on the ISP gateway (I checked with them tonight and no issues to report with my fiber connection). While on the gateway wifi that bypasses the box, I have no bandwidth issue, no way to rollback, and you're telling us that support needs to check OUR network first?
Is the day the day that I lose any and all respect for company that I have been promoting as the must buy device for so many friends, colleagues and clients?
I'm dead in the water with limited time, and some idiot above said we should reset to factory! Roll back or update the issue ASAP please. -
@Jeremy Johnston calling me an idiot ?
i sure hope you're not working in the tech industry, because it seems you're not capable of providing details and only blame.
And people seem to think, that their ISP is flawless
or their Firewalla Dockers, have zero issues,
headsup, im on Purple, my Adguard settings, had screwed up youtube, because of a filter list that ive subscriped, causing it to flip .
and for those who are in this thread, would it seem odd, if its only a small handful ?
for reference :
- purple with firmware ver 19760
- beta app- no dns services enabled
-no adblock
-enabled Qos using CAKE
- Adguard home on docker,
990 Mb/s up down, no issues,
just to be useful, fiber to router, to firewalla, to wireless asus router [ ap mode ]
no switch or PoE
Updated my original post , because i wanted to blast Jeremy Johnston and whomever downvoted, but it should be more productive to those who really need help and did their own due diligence, and are in desperate need for help -
An intermediate "solution" for me:
- SSH login to the Firewalla box
- Set network ports to 100 MBit/s
pi@Firewalla:~ (Firewalla) $ sudo ethtool -s eth1 speed 100 duplex full autoneg on
pi@Firewalla:~ (Firewalla) $ sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg on
- After that, the download is of course below 100 MBit/s. However, the upload is back to normal values.
Must be reset later. When restarting, the settings should also be gone again. Perform at your own risk ;) -
@ Wolfgang,
just throwing this out, would there be a chance its the batch of faulty Firewalla chipset ? The one where it down throttles due to heat ?
@ VAV think apart from that is to have a [ restore point] at least what ever works, is offered as fail safe,
agreeing the rollback seems oddly missing -
I raised a support ticket before seeing this thread.
I'm hitting the same issue on my Purple, I get about 25% packet loss on traffic through the device. I've tried a factory reset, enabling and disabling various features but only bypassing the Purple has restored the network to a usable state. The problem isn't upstream because everything works as intended if I connect directly to the ISP's router.
Could we get an update on when this might be fixed? I'm happy to provide any logs / settings etc. if support need somebody to work with to debug the problem.
