Gold in router mode crashing WiFi with a specific model of iPad
I already communicated this to support (request #64543) and they have been very responsive.
Additionally sharing here.
- Cable Modem = Netgear CM1200
- Wifi Router = Netgear NightHawk R7800
- Firewalla Gold
Firewalla setup in router mode:
CableModem -- FirewallaGold -- WifiRouter(AP mode)
All our devices worked fine, except iPad (Pro 9.7")(OS 16.4.1, latest at this point). All wireless devices are on the same subnet. We have two iPads of this generation, and they both crash the wifi (the main one, I don't have wifi SD) in a matter of ~8 seconds, deterministically. Another, newer generation iPad works fine.
I power cycled the iPad; I reset network settings on the iPad; I factory reset the wifi router... nothing helped. I compared the wifi settings of the iPads to iPhones, and they are same.
Switched Firewalla to Simple mode:
CableModem -- WifiRouter(router mode) -- FirewallaGold
Had some issues with it tanking the connection, then I discovered my wifi router is not compatible with that mode. The more you know: https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360047098773-Router-Compatibility-Simple-and-DHCP-Mode
Switched Firewalla to DHCP mode:
CableModem -- WifiRouter(router mode) -- FirewallaGold
Everything is OK; including two offending iPads.
At the end of the day, I wanted to operate Firewalla in router mode per recommendation, but this has been painful debug experience. I'm hoping for a solution short of buying new iPads.
Support suggested that I experiment with "emergency access."
I planned to play with this over the weekend, but frankly I'm deciding to stay in DHCP mode, since going thru the effort is painful and I'm not convinced there is a tangible return.
I would like to know if others have seen this issue and perhaps resolved it.
