Exfat support?

Hello, I'd love to expand my firewalla gold's capabilities by reading / writing to external drives. However, ubuntu doesn't come with support for exfat out of the box. I tried installing it using the apt exfat-util package however, looks like my device is out of space and cannot read/write to certain directories. Is there a "sane" way to add exfat support? Or do I need to go plumbing into the depths of ubuntu to make space for exfat and resolve the other errors I'm getting post unailising apt?
