Firewalla Policy & Content Based Routing VPN question

Hi guys

This

article explain how to set a route to send all content-based traffic "video" for example thought a VPN connection. In this setup you select which devices are going to be routed the traffic. Then of course you need to have already setup a VPN which also allows you to setup devices to be routed the traffic.

 

Whats is not clear:

Does it connect on demand or the VPN must be connected already?

Do I leave the devices empty on the VPN connection as the Route has the devices also?

  The VPN connection would be set up and whatever content you direct would go there (but not other content). You could: 

  • Have only content for some sites (work, a video streaming site, etc.) go to a VPN but everything else go to ISP. Policy Based Routes help here.
  • Have all traffic for one Group of devices use the VPN but no other devices. You could do this either through VPN Client or Policy Based Routes.
  • You can also use Policy Based Routes in multi-wan configurations to select which WAN to use. 

  In the second case, you don't have the devices permanently assigned to the VPN Client.
