Android app notifications protocol

Sorry if this has already been answered, but how does the Firewalla app receive notifications from a box in another state when that Android phone with the app is without both WiFi and mobile data? I thought I saw this just today and it struck me as impossible, but forgot that Google might be doing something behind the curtains.

  Check the alert and make sure it is not old ... firewalla uses standard android notifications, there is nothing special about it
