How can firewalla see ip requests when commercial vpn turned on?

I'm just interested in how this works...

I have commercial vpn software on my laptop e.g. BitdefenderVPN / NordVPN

When it's connected and 'secured' firewalla is still registering some activity to that device e.g. to outlook.office.365.com, zoom.us, amazonaws.com, LinkedIn.com 

I thought that a vpn was going to hide all this traffic from local network monitoring? or does it only encrypt the packets and not the ip requests?

  The header is still visible (where the packets are going). The content is encrypted. It's kinda like the Snail Mail, the envelope says where it is going and the contents are hidden inside.

  If you have VPN on for everyone on your laptop, firewalla should only see one stream of data going to your VPN service provider.

  If you see your laptop is going to other places, then either your VPN work that way or it is not configured correctly.
