SOLVED: Firewalla, Orbi, and iRobot Roomba S9+ Follow Up
Hey gang,
I wanted to follow up on my original post from a while back with new information! Spoiler alert: I got everything working!! Here's what's transpired since my initial post:
1. I upgraded my Orbi RBK853 (the wifi-6 3-pack from Costco) to the Orbi Pro SXK80 (3 pack) that I got on sale during Prime Day. The BIG difference between these two besides the hardware being beefier in the latter is the ability to create VLAN tags across 4 different individual wireless networks. Which leads me to...
2. I created a separate wireless network specifically for IoT devices and (this is the critical piece) ticked the box for "Enable SSID separation for 2.4G/5GHz." So now, I have a 2.4Ghz SSID and a 5GHz SSID. The reason I did this is because someone on Reddit mentioned in passing that the Roomba only likes the 2.4GHz band. Configured an IOT VLAN for this wireless network too.
3. On the Firewalla, I set up a VLAN with the same VLAN ID.
4. Reset the wireless settings on the Roomba, crossed my fingers, prayed to whatever tech god would listen, and went about connecting the Roomba to the new 2.4 GHz network I created...and wouldn't you know it, IT WORKED!!!! I now have the Firewalla on my network AND I can see my Roomba S9 in the app!!
TLDR: If you're having issues with the Roomba S9 connecting to the app with Firewalla in place, see if you can separate the 2.4 and 5 GHz channels into their own unique SSIDs and then connect it to the 2.4 GHz one. I have no idea why this worked (because it works just fine with a combined wireless network without FWG in place, but whatever...I'll take it.
