LitterRobot4 dropping Wifi connection to AP7
Hardware:
- Firewalla Gold Pro
- (2) Firewalla AP7 (connected with first AP hardwired and second AP wireless)
- Litter Robot 4
The Litter Robot 4 is connected the following AP7 SSID:
- Signal Strength: -50-54dBm
- VqLAN: Enabled
- Device Isolation: Enabled
- Security: Mixed Personal
- Band: 2.4GHz only
- Connected to second AP
- Wireless Backhaul is currently -64dBm
The wireless connection periodically drops and I have to reset at the Litter Robot 4 to reconnect. Looking for troubleshooting steps as this droppage never occurred with Orbi Mesh. I'm also intrigued with the idea of using the Firewalla Gold Pro to trigger a smart switch as this is a viable solution to have the Firewalla Gold Pro that is able to determine that the IP is unavailable so trigger to send a stop|start to a smart switch is an acceptable solution.

@XRaptor29: Yes, exactly right. This always occurs after a modification on AP7 causing a reset, but it also occurs periodically after a period of time.
@Firewalla: It is set to Mixed Personal which says in the comments that this algorithm uses WPA2 Personal for 2.4ghz which should be the most forgiving. The LitterRobot4 only runs on 2.4ghz. I isolated this box in a 2.4ghz SSID.

This is what I read from previous tickets, very likely this device may be buggy in certain situations

Looks like there are lots of similar issues on the internet.

I think the device has problem on "auto reconnect" when wifi is disconnected. When you made modification to AP7, if the change requires restarting wifi service, it will have to disconnect devices and let them reconnect back. This may also happen when AP7 software is updated.
Make sure you disable "band steering", this may prevent the device from getting disconnected.
However, all of these are just workarounds. If a device can't auto reconnect back, it's very likely device's own issue.

Firewalla Been experiencing disconnect issues with my Synology WiFi cameras (Model: CC400W). I tried almost everything including the cameras on their own SSID, 5 GHz ONLY, DFS channels disabled. I wouldn't think band steering would matter if only 5 GHz is allowed on a single SSID, but something is causing them to disconnect and once that happens, they will not re-connect automatically unless I manually turn the camera off and on again. I don't believe this is a Synology issue, but have a pending ticket with them as well. It happens very randomly maybe once every other day or so. They have great signal strength (-60 or better). Hard to tell if it's when they might try to roam to another AP7-D.

Harper Falcon If the camera refuses to connect back after disconnect, it is almost always the camera's issue. (unless you have other devices that operate the same way)
A few things on your running configuration
1. What WPA are you using? (Do you know what this camera requires?)
2. Have you tried to lock the camera to a 2.4GHz or 5GHz SSID?
-
Firewalla - the app doesn't show which WPA a device is currently using which would be nice. But I have the SSID for my cameras set to WPA2/WPA3, but I can't lock it to just WPA2 or WPA3, so I'll switch to "Mixed Personal" and test that. There is no way to lock the camera itself to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. However, when I setup my SSID in Firewalla, changing to 5 GHz only drastically improved the connection overall.
Supported Camera Specs:WiFi Protocol IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi Frequency 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz Wireless Encryption Protocol - WPA Personal
- WPA2 Personal
- WPA3 Personal
