AP7 - choose reserved IP

Since the AP7 is fully managed by the controller running on your Firewalla unit, its IP allocation is also done automatically. To prevent a network shutdown, best not to touch anything and let the controller manage everything.

Understood.... but....   (because there's always a but)  Part of the reason i assign reserved (not static) IP's for network devices is because I also monitor them using Zabbix via IP so I can't have them changing due to normal DHCP.  Since I want to do a reservation and not a static assignment I wouldn't believe this to be a request that should "break things".   So I'm clear, is there a way to do this with AP7's currenty?

To clarify, the AP7's are not in production at the moment. I'm experimenting with them and the VqLAN and VLAN settings first, once everything works as expected I'll migrate them into production.

I also use static assignments for my current APs, but that is because I can access them directly by a webUI and didn't want to try and scan for them, or look at my router table, in case they changed.  What kind of monitoring are you doing on an AP that is exposed outside the controller's UI?

Hey there Larry.  For simple devices such as the current AP's, TV's, Stream boxes, cameras etc I monitor for up/down so I get notified if a device goes down unexpectedly indicating a device or network issue. More critical devices such as switches and servers are monitored for up/down, high interface utilization, memory, CPU, disk etc.  I like to keep all monitored devices in the first part of the primary subnet for convenience sake and have reserved IP's so that a) they don't change unexpectedly and b) so that I know their IP by heart when logging in vs. looking them up. For larger networks I've worked on static IP's are the only way but for my home network I prefer DHCP reservations.

Hello, I also use reserved IP's for some devices. This maintains stability finding and maintaining a connection for some devices used for dashboards (Homey and Home Assistant). Many times, I wish I could reserve MAC's. If FW - AP7 can maintain a consistent link between IP and device, shouldn't be a problem. My unit just shipped, therefore won't know how this works until next week, earliest.

Without any AP7 operational knowledge, my vote would be to have the ability to assign IP's.

Although a different thread, would like the ability to assign devices to AP's. I have encountered using Eero, Orbi Pro and now Omada, Devices at times want to stay connected to the furthest away AP. Has to be a power/channel selection which hoping the automatic Wi-Fi optimization will address these concerns.

Apologies for possibly hijacking or splintering the string.

Firewalla team, looking for clarification as to IF reserving a DHCP IP for the AP7 (not speaking about clients behind the AP) is possible, and if not would this be available in a future release?

Excellent!!!!  Almost there, now we just need to ability to set the IP instead of reserving the existing lease.

    Thanks Csimet!
