I'm looking for the same solution.  I didn't see anything in the articles that detailed the solution?

Engineers are building a youtube block now, hopefully, they can have something soon.

What we know that works (sort of) is to block using DNS Block (rather than default) of youtube.com and googlevideo.com

    Me, too!

I realize it's a tough problem; Google's services are so very intertwined.

Running the gold in router mode and also had issues with other google services being blocked/broken when attempting to block youtube. I went ahead and switched it to simple dns block mode for youtube.com and googlevideo.com and this is working effectively against a 10 year old so far.

    A little update:

I haven't been able to simultaneously a) block Youtube and b) allow all the Classroom content that these kids use.  However, I've been having good luck with Firewalla's Alarms. (Sometimes there's a bit of delay, or some devices don't seem to trigger occasionally, but it's been good!)

When I see an alarm go off, I'll check on the kids.  Not exactly what I was looking for, but maybe for the better.  With Alarms, I'm able to gently intervene when they lose focus.

Did you try simply going with a dns block for youtube.com and googlevideo.com? Its working well for me while still allowing my son to access all his school stuff that has dependencies on intertwined google infra.

Yes, I've tried a few permutations of DNS ("Domain-only" in the interface) block.  Teacher-posted videos were being caught in the net, unfortunately.

Glad that it's working for you!  I might give it another shot at some point.  Right now, the alerts are nice because the kids don't know about them, so they don't get angry.  And, I get to redirect them towards a non-screen distraction when their attention wanes.
