Smart Queue and Rate Limit expected throughput?
Hi there,
SQM typically impacts throughput significantly depending on the CPU capabilities - UniFi suffers from this terribly.
Does anyone know or has tested what the limit (mbps?) is on the Firewalla Gold?
Thanks,
Ian

Depends on the queue type. fq_codel is lightweight, this is what we have in the early access. (you can try it out if you want, there is no (visible) reduction on performance). CAKE on the other hand will reduce CPU much more than fq_codel, exactly how much, we have not fully test yet.
fq_codel is in https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052804993-Firewalla-1-971-Early-Access-

The current implementation does allow additional queueing algorithms. We are going to watch and see how people are using the fq_codel implementation, if there is a real need, we can bring in CAKE as an additional method. We have not fully tested CAKE on the gold, but it will likely cost more CPU, in theory, the bandwidth should not decrease too much.
Our next thing will be implementing prioritization, wait a bit and see how people feel about fq_codel

Hi all, just a quick update on this. I've got nearly all features enabled (including smart queueing) and I'm currently finding the CPU is hitting 100% at around 217mbps throughput (internet download). However on the HTML5 speed test tool I'm still able to get a gigabit connection up and down. I've attached some screenshots of what I was doing... I've also opened a support case with the logs attached in case it proves to be useful.

I wouldn't worry too much about the CPU used by firewalla. All three boxes are engineered to fully utilize the CPU, even when idle. A lot of it is related to extra anomalies from the flows. Feel free to send an email to help@firewalla.com, our engineers can help you to check inside.
