  I thought I saw some logs indicating this implementation in 1.9.71. May be we just need an active stat instead of an up/down alert.

  I don't recall seeing this. But yes, i'm looking for more than an alert.  Something like "Ping avg/std dev last 5 hours = XXms/YYms" and for pinging, both the host and frequency can be defined.  e.g. ping 1.1.1.1 every 10 mins.

  We have all of these already inside the code.  Need to expose them somehow.   For example, the ping tests were used to pick DoH client (if you have a few), and used on the Gold to detect failures when using multiWAN
