Spy Chip
How can we be certain that this device does not contain a spy chip? It would be a logical target to install one would it not?

I think if someone wants to deploy these chips (if they exist), they probably have a better chance just put into your router. The routers get all of your traffic, and it is a lot more popular, plus ... complex. Hence hardware attack will be harder to detect. Now, if you look at the Firewalla boards, they are probably the simplest you can find ... And if these guys really know what they are doing, put them directly in devices is even better.
If the attack is software, and assume you trust firewalla company and open source, we allow you to throw away the SD card and burn your own from the image off github.com

OpenSource means that you can take the source, audit it and / or compile it yourself.
Also the company was founded by Chinesse and they must be proud of that, but based and managed in San Jose CA | USA so they must accomplish FCC to sell not only in US, but worldwide!
They are a good StartUp example on how small ideas grown to final product which is simple enought for end-users w/o technical knowledge and we the technical peope who cooperate of evolving of this dream have no doubt of security conecrn followed by the stuff, the members and the community!
Best regards!
