Keith, thanks for reporting this.  Likely something else is not right.  Can you turn off adblock and family mode and see if you can get the access back.

The adblock lists is something we acquired from a partner

Here are some details of where the blocks are.

    https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007210473-Tutorial-Where-Firewalla-Can-Block-

Another quick check is tapping on rules and see if there are anything that accidentally got blocked.

Jonas, do you have adblock and/or family mode turned on?  Any other blocks before?  (in rules?)

If you are encountering issues with youtube or using chromcast (the device), please turn off Adblock. It seems there are a few changes in how google is delivering ad's and it is causing issues ...

Why? google doesn't like ad blockers.

@jonas @keith, can you guys check if this works?

    Hello!

Thank you for your fast reply and i am sorry for my, somewhat late replay, but i am in an other timezone!

Anyways, i had a recently created rule blocking googleapsis.com, removing that rule seems to have solved the issue (at least for my Samsung S8 phone), i will have to wait til later during the day to be able to test if the Chromcast and iPad works. Been working as a support technician for a very long time i know, IT IS often the user :-)

I guess it is not very interesting anymore due to above but turning off/on Ad-block did not change anything!

So for now thank you so much for your help and i will be back with more, if any, findings!

    Best regards

    Jonas

You see how serious we are with everything you guys reported :)   And keep them coming, we need to make firewalla perfect

Anyway, at least we found something with the ad block list ... (even it is not your problem).  We put a warning on adblocks ...  so people know ... it is not normal to block ads and there are consequences :)

Yepp, i know that to :-) and that you do just great!

I will keep it coming but i will check thru my own stuff more carefully before i report a "Firewalla" problem in the future thu!

Of course these sites living on AD's don't want them blocked! I have got several warnings or rather comments from sites saying " You seems to have AD blocking turned on, please turn it off, ADs is what keeps our site running"

I do have an other question about blocking thu but i need to think thru how to really ask it and i think i will start a new thread for that so i'll get back to you!

Have a wonderful day and weekend!

    Regards

@jonas, if everyone is as helpful as you guys, then we will be very happy to make more cool features.  We just had one customer who received Firewalla in January, send us a note, saying it suck and want a return.  We told him, it has been 6 months ... we can accept return that old.  Then he went to Amazon, gave us a one star review, took a picture of our nice firewalla ... and a note on top.  Anyway, just an example, how a good customer drives us to do better things, and a bad customer drives demoralize us.

    Have a good weekend everyone

Well, what can i say...people are strange, really strange 🤔 I really, really hope that it is rare, complaints about support and the Firewalla i mean, ANYONE that has ever sponsored a campain on any crowdfunding plattform or had anything to do with Internet and IT security must realize that your support and product is one of a kind, not yet to be found elsewhere (except for the Blue maybe, which i btw signed up for)
    Have a wondeful weekend
    Best regards

    Firewalla,

I'll have to wait 24 hours or so for their cookie to die, or at least do a reboot later today to test.  Thanks for the advice.  It would really help though it your log said that it was blocking that URL, that would have helped.

Will let you know after a reboot with Firewalla on and running and the error appears again.

    Cheers, Keith

Firewalla, Yup, that was it.  Google is loading fonts from their googleapis.com site.  I've blocked fonts for almost 20 years because of how the browser handles them, except Google.  Google in the few months or so has required them.  Ok, so that makes sense that Firewalla is blocking them now and that is why I have an issue.

Any chance on adding them to the log so I can see what is being blocked by the appliance?  Any chance of whitelisting URLs to override the  packaged block lists?

    Thanks,

    Keith

Keith, do you mean after turn off adblock your problem goes away? or unblock googleapi's?

@melvin and team is working on something  on this to give better info on blocks and impact.   Hopefully we can have something soon. (soon here is 1 month)

Firewalla,  Yes.  After disabling Adblocking on the appliance, the problem went away and I was able to use the chromecast and visit all the google websites I use including Youtube.

    Thanks

Keith, thanks for the verifications.  Seems this problem is randomly happen.  We will work on a new set and see if we can fix this next week.

Yeah, it's random alright. Yesterday, everything was not loading as before.  AdBlocker still off.  But, when I cycle the AdBlocker on/off again, it will work.  Note:  More of the page loads as if the adblocker is off, but I still think something, that's not obviously the authentication, is still being blocked.  Also, maybe NOT using chinese NTP servers would be a good idea.  There are plenty of free .org NTP servers to choose from.

    Thanks

@Keith, Where do you see the Chinese NTP servers?  The NTP settings are Ubuntu defaults. Will look at this for sure.  Are you in the states? or EU?

As of problems, if adblock is off, double check rules and see if you have anything else that may be blocked and used by google.  Also turn off family mode, that one uses opendns

Firewalla, I'm in the US.  I don't see that any of my rules are blocking, but I don't often see an entry in the log that is lined out.  Most of my rules are based on odd behavior from websites and some games that have a backend website.  I'm playing one now called Interstellar Rift that talks to several backend servers without formally telling you it is doing so.  My Petcube does somethings like that too.  Petcube talks to Petcube servers and one in Dallas that isn't Petcube but some random server farm.  If I block that random server, PetCube doesn't work.  Who knows why.  Third party IOT products are weird.

Family mode is off and has always been off.

Keith, do you have any rules that's blocking?  Are these rules IP address or domains?  The issue with IP block is, one IP may host multiple domains, which ... at times is dangerous to do.  Domain block should be a lot more clean, but if IP changes, we do adjust accordingly

If you'd like we can come inside and take a look

Firewalla, If I turn AdBlock on and then off again, the problem goes away for a day or two.  It's not anything I'm blocking I don't think.  I am not blocking their URLs or any IP marked as a google subsidiary company except google ads.  Unfortunately, it's seems to be just the google products that are effected.  If it wasn't so persistent and it clears when you cycle the device, I would be so picky.

Keith, I'll open a quick ticket, possible to give us support access to the unit?  this way we can see if there are any bugs that may cause this.  We are tuning the adblocker list now, hopefully we will have it out in a day or so.   (this will remove many of the google site that may be fighting with ad blockers)

@keith, we have deployed the new adblock lists, should fixed the google/youtube issues.  (we hope)

Firewalla, No Change.  Every few days I need to turn the AdBlocker on and off again to get traffic through your device.  Somehow your AdBlocker turns back on internally without showing it's on.  Also, I'd like to be able to see what you links are being blocked that way I can see what your device is doing for me.

    Thanks.

@keith possible to give us support access?  we can look and see if there is a bug.  email to help@firewalla.com

The blocked links are all hashed, so they are meaningless.   We may switch to a open ad blocker list, when we do that, you should be able to see it.
