Question about model selection for travel router suitability
Considering getting a Firewalla purple for travel.
Wanting ability to use short range wifi on purple for multiple devices.
Started wondering if I should get a Gold SE instead and add a wifi antenna (because the device could serve other purposes in future, and was thinking performance would be better)
Questions are:
- Would the Gold SE behave the same way as a purple for travel if I add the wifi antenna (allow for connecting to hotspot for WAN etc)?
- Would the short range wifi be improved over the purple such that proximity to WAN router and wifi LAN clients to Firewalla could be greater distance (is wifi using antenna better than built in purple)?
- Would VPN performance be better or worse depending on selection of purple or SE?
Other trivia is that I would initially be using the purple not as travel, but as first Firewalla device in router mode at house, have ordered a pro which I would replace the purple with and then use purple (or SE if I get that instead) for travel and site to site VPN.
Thanks for the help.

If you need WiFi for less than 8 devices, the Purple (not the SE version) is the best one out there. The WiFi-SD can also support AP mode, but its primary optimization is really WAN, not LAN.
Purple will likely have better VPN performance; it has 6 cores (compared with SE, 4 cores). This performance will definitely show if you are using WireGuard.
