Firewalla Purple Switch from Centry Link to Quantum Fiber
Hey all,
Due to a winter storm last month my Century Link Fiber service went out Jan 12th and they did not send a tech to repair till Feb 22nd. Luckily I have a 5g home backup system, but when CL Tech eventually did show up, they told me I am a Quantum Fiber customer now. After fixing my broken fiber drop they also told me I have to use a Quantum C5500XK Smart NID as a modem. I told the tech I use my own Firewalla Purple as a router with a Nighthawk EAX80 in AP mode for wifi, so I don't need another modem. He did not understand anything I said and insisted I need this Quantum c5500XK combo thing mounted to my wall. I think it is supposed to act as an ONT and Modem all in one, however the tech did not remove the Calix 711ge ONT that has always been on the side of my house. It is still inline. The fiber comes from the pole to the 711ge, then ethernet goes from that to the C5500XK which is now mounted inside my house on the wall. He said this is the only way to make internet happen.
Previously I was able to go from the 711ge ONT directly into my Firewalla Purple in Router Mode, then off to the Nighthawk in AP mode for wifi to the house. I can no longer do that. The only way I could get Firewalla to connect was by placing the c5500XK in Transparent Bridge Mode between the 711ge and my Firewalla Purple. I also had to leave the VLAN tagging blank instead of 201 where it previously was. I could not get any combination of settings with the ONT going directly to Firewalla Purple to work.
It seems to be working fine in the new configuration, but I would like to know if there is anyway for me to bypass this C5500XK modem in transparent mode? Seems dumb to have an extra modem in line when the Firewalla purple is a capable modem. Plus it worked perfectly fine before the drop got taken out by the weather. Did Quantum change the network in a way that makes ONT directly into Firewalla Purple Wan Port not work? CL or Quantum or whoever I get at customer service never has any idea what I'm talking about. Any ideas? Or should I just leave it alone and accept the new C5500XK modem as a permanent fixture in my house now?

It's been 100% stable for 3 days now so I guess this new configuration is the way to go. For anyone else who encounters this switch the crucial setting after putting the C550XK into bridge mode is to set up Firewalla with no Vlan Tagging. Previously it was set to 201, but the C5500XK does the tagging now so telling Firewalla to do it also will cause a connection error.
Oh and my PPP creds still require @centrylink.net at the end despite being a quantum customer now. Thanks as always Firewalla community. Sure am happy with my Purple. Been using for over a year now with no problems on the Firewalla side.
