Set up Questions
Current setup:
Standard cable modem
D-Link DIR890L Wifi Router
TP Link WiFi Extender
Pi Hole via an original Raspberry Pi (not fully in place yet)
Currently I have 2 wired connections
QNAP NAS
Eufy Security Hub
I also have a good number of WiFi clients (XBOX, streaming devices, laptops, tablets, smart devices, etc).
We are going to be upgrading our router/WiFi and I’m starting to look into options. I have 2 young children (5 and 7) so I also started investigating parental controls/filtering. Firewalla popped up and sounds like it fits what I’m looking for. The parental controls and visibility into network details sound great.
I started thinking about set up options and have a few questions after my initial research.
- If I set up a Firewalla gold then connect an AP or WiFi router to it, does it then in turn protect all of the WiFi devices connected to the AP?
- I’ve read in 1 or 2 reviews that router mode has issues/is missing things (mainly here https://dongknows.com/firewalla-gold-review/) . Can anyone elaborate on that from experience?
- If I install a Gold in router mode, is everything hardwired and wifi on the same network?
I’m also looking for suggestions on what the best physical and logical configuration is. For example, the purple in Simple mode. If I connected this to a new WiFi router, would this give me the same visibility/control? Appreciate everyone’s responses!

1. If you make firewalla gold into "router" mode, anything (AP/WiFi/ethernet) behind it will be protected.
2. Dongknows review is questionable. You can look at the comments ... firewalla router mode is pretty solid set of features.
