Verizon Fios + Purple Multi-room setup with wireless and wired
Hi everyone. Here is my setup and problem statement/question (For use with Purple FwG):
Room1: Verizon Fios comes into Room1 (Both Coax and Ethernet). Both are connected to G1100 Router (Which then outputs to mesh wireless router/devices, computers, another device).
Room2: Same network, but computers are hard-wired connected via Ethernet. Or rather, MoCA converter plugged into Coax from the wall, and then Ethernet to the computers (Coax from the wall-->MoCA-->Computer).
In my testing, it appears that the following is true:
--If I unplug the coax at the router, then WiFi still works everywhere, but the Ethernet in Room2 no longer functions (so, no Coax, no hard-wired Ethernet). TV STB still works (but I'm not concerned about TV right now)
--Logically, this tells me that Ethernet signal in Room2 *does* travel into the router from the wall, and back out (via Coax), then on to Room2. Put another way, Traffic to Room2 comes through the router from the ONT (I was wondering if Room2 comes directly from ONT. It does not appear to. It appears to need to come through the router and that the Coax in Room2 is downstream from this connection)
--If I unplug the Ethernet at the router (the Ethernet that comes from the wall/ONT), then nothing works. So, if I want both wired and wireless, I need inputs from both Coax and Ethernet at the source.
--Similarly, it follows that if I want to firewall traffic for both wired and wireless connections, it needs to be at the front end - between the ONT and the router. That way, traffic bound for WiFi is inspected, and traffic bound for Room2 Coax (Ethernet) is also inspected.
Problem statement: Purple has only one WAN (input). I was thinking that I could MoCA the Coax (to output to Ethernet). But then I'm still left with two Ethernet cables (one from MoCA and one from the wall) and only one input port on the Purple.
Question: Can I run two separate Purples (one for each of these lines), then bring those two inputs into a generic router (as separate WAN inputs), and then output a single line to the router?
So:
Wireless: ONT --> FwG --> Generic Router --> G1100 Router --> Mesh, etc
Wired: ONT --> MoCA --> FwG --> Generic Router --> G1100 Router
OR:
Could I do merge the two at a Generic Router. So:
ONT --> Generic Router --> (both MoCA and Source Ethernet cable from the wall) --> Output one line to FwG --> G1100?
This seems like it would not work, but I don't know. This probably makes no sense, but just in case it does, any thoughts? Thanks!!
