Firewalla and a second router setup - Need a hand validating setup
Let me first say that I absolutely love my Firewalla Gold. Rarely had issues and now I’m looking to solve a major issue at home, wall plugs!
Basically, I’m forced to used wall plugs for Ethernet in my home office and that limits my speed to about 30mbps, granted I can only get internet at 50mbps but hey-ho it also means any routing to my FW is limited in speed as well.
I’m currently using Google mesh wifi, and whilst it’s had its ups and downs, it does the job for me. That being said, the nodes have no Ethernet ports so I cannot connect my home office network back to my FW without using Ethernet wall plugs which constantly go up and down.
I’m looking at getting either ASUS XT8s or Eero’s. Ideally I’d want VLANs but it’s not a total deal breaker. What I was thinking was setting it up as follows. Modem > Firewalla > Mesh Node 1 ——- wifi ——— > Mesh Node 2 > Secondary router [possibly another Firewalla] > Switch > ESXi etc.
The wifi would effectively be a bridge for me, and I would still have all of my IOT on there etc. If I grabbed another Firewalla I could potentially set up a VPN tunnel between them, not that there too much point apart from eliminating double NAT [and allowing me to have VLANs on my office for the hell of it]. I don’t care about the wifi in my office too much, it’ll all be segmented and ruled off in the FW even without VLANs.
Would this setup work? Just looking for some help validating my madness before forming out for some new wifi nodes. Cheers!
