Due to the global chip shortage and the increasing cost of parts on the Firewalla Gold, we are now releasing the Firewalla Gold Rev B. This unit has a slightly faster CPU, is fully compatible with the Firewalla Gold (original) hardware, and uses the same software image. The build cost of this Rev B is a bit more expensive than the original version, but in the long run, its price will be much more stable.
Having two revisions of the Gold helps us to better hedge against the chip shortage and a way to get more units out to you.
Both of these units are fully compatible with each other, so there will never be a feature in the future that will run on the original and not the rev B. (vice versa)
FAQ:
Why Build the Rev B? (social media post)
The main reason for releasing the Rev B version is as we posted, to eliminate parts shortages and prevent price increases. For example, the power management chip on the current model is out of stock, and even to get it, we have to pay more and more. (this is the reason you see FWG price going up and up and up and up, and FWG out of stock for 2 weeks).
To change to a different power management chip, we will have to change the CPU + a few other little things. These changes are expensive, but ... in the long run, the price of the unit won't go up like crazy. The pricing difference is just that.
Both of these units are fully compatible with each other, so there will never be a feature in the future that will run on the original and not the rev B. (vice versa)
Having two versions existing simultaneously helps us hedge against unreasonable part price increases. So in the long run we will be building both original and rev B, depending on the price of parts. (it is also possible there may be a rev C if the chip shortage doesn't calm down)
Since this change is simply hedging against the chip shortage, and not really much of a function change, (meaning, it is really not NEW), we didn't do much press behind it.
Which one should you get?
Get whatever is available. Due to the chip shortage, we can not guarantee unit availability at all times.
What are the major differences?
- Original CPU: Intel N3160
- Rev B CPU: Intel J4125
