DNS Booster is Firewalla's DNS Cache.
A DNS cache (sometimes called a DNS resolver cache) is a temporary database maintained in memory that contains records of all the recent visits and attempted visits to websites and other internet domains. After an initial visit to any website, DNS lookup results will be returned from memory to speed up connections.
This feature has always been there to intercept and accelerate DNS requests. As of box version 1.965, we decided to break the DNS cache function to be applied per device (rather than applied to all devices), which is why you now see the DNS Booster function.
Warning: If you turn DNS Booster off, many DNS blocks will NOT work. Unless you know what you are doing and are okay with the possibility of Firewalla not being able to block risky connections, please don't turn DNS Booster off.
If you're okay with the risks of disabling DNS Booster, you can customize which devices have DNS Booster applied by navigating to your box's settings. Tap Advanced and then tap Configurations.
You should see the DNS Booster option. It is applied to all devices by default. Tap into it to remove devices from the list.

Can this be disabled globally? It interferes with pi-hole.
It is per device I think
Can we please have a toggle for global setting? I want to turn it off completely as I use Pihole.
problem is some of the active protect may use this feature in a combination of IP blocking. So turn it off completely, will reduce the effect of certain rules.
In that case, would the reduction of effectiveness affect any devices with DNS booster turned off?
The reduction will only affect devices with DNS booster off. If DNS booster is on, all the functions will be managed by Firewalla
is there a cli command to turn off DNS booster globally?
I've been searching for like 10 minutes and cannot find where this setting is in the app. Anyone? (firewalla gold in router mode)
